    Mountain Skills (Mountain Training Course)

    Our Mountain Training Mountain Skills course is a great opportunity to learn more about looking after yourself in the UK’s mountain areas . These include the Lake District , North Wales and Scottish Highlands where the terrain is   steep, rough and rocky.

    The course covers planning a journey in the mountains, what to take , navigation, safe and efficient movement on steep and rocky terrain, common mountain hazards and emergency procedures.  Our Mountain Skills courses include plenty of opportunities to practise navigation and route finding skills as part of a journey through the mountains. By the end of the course you’ll know how to avoid getting lost and how to look after yourself in challenging conditions. The course is designed to give you the tools to explore with confidence as you develop your movement skills and learn more about risk management.

    You will need to have some hill walking experience already and a reasonable level of hill fitness.

    Courses are 2 days long , and based in the Lake District. All our course staff are experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders.

    Hill Skills (Mountain Training Course)

    Our Mountain Training Hill Skills course is a great way to learn more about being confident and safe in the UK hills and moorlands. These include The Yorkshire Dales, The Peak District, The Pennines , Yorkshire Moors and Northumberland.

    The course covers  planning a walk in the hills, what to take and how to pack, navigation in the hills, common hazards and how to deal with them, and what to do in an emergency.

    Our Hill Skills courses include plenty of opportunities to practise navigation and route finding skills. By the end of the course you’ll know how to avoid getting lost and how to look after yourself in challenging conditions. The course is designed to give you the tools to explore and navigate  the UK hills and moorland  safely and with confidence.

    The Hill Skills course is aimed at people who are just starting out in hillwalking , or those who want to further develop their confidence and get out beyond  the routes they know well.

    Courses are 2 days long and based in the Yorkshire Dales or the South and West Pennines. All our course staff are experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders.

  • Navigation - Starting the Journey image

    Navigation – Starting the Journey

    “Navigation – Starting the Journey” is aimed at people who have no, or limited,  experience  of navigating in open country. Also – if it’s been a long time since you used  a map and compass , then its a good place to revisit and develop your skills.

    It is a practical “hands on” course , with a small group size to help you get the best learning experience.

    You will learn fundamental skills in using a map and compass including:

    Understanding map symbols

    Setting a map so it aligns with your route

    Measuring distance and timing

    Following a route on map and keeping track of location

    The course will also include information on where to go, access, kit and safety awareness

    The course is 1 day, and based in either the Yorkshire Dales or the South and West Pennines.  All our course staff are experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders.

     

  • Navigation - Advanced image

    Navigation – Advanced

    Our “Navigation Advanced” course is a great progression from the “Navigation -Starting the Journey” course and from our Hill and Mountain Skills courses .  It’s aimed at people who are already confident in using a map and compass on path and track networks , and want to develop their skills  in navigating in more  open country.

    It is a practical “hands on” course , with a small group size to help you get the best learning experience. The content will be adapted to suit the experience and needs of the group.

    The course includes :

    Contours and landforms in navigation

    Using a compass for setting and following bearings

    Measure distance in rough ground

    Attack points and catching features

    Recognising and dealing with navigation errors

    The course is 1 day, and based in either the Yorkshire Dales, Howgills or the South and West Pennines.  All our course staff are experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders.

  • Navigation Pro - contours and micro navigation  image

    Navigation Pro – contours and micro navigation

    Navigation Pro – it’s for you if you are confident in using a map and compass in open country, using bearings, and with a good understanding of contours and landforms. Its a great progression from our Mountain Skills course or our Navigation Advanced course .

    It is a practical “hands on” course , with a small group size to help you get the best learning experience. The content will be adapted to suit the experience and needs of the group.

    The course includes;

    Contour interpretation – including small features and intricate detail

    Accurate distance and time measurement

    Continuous map contact

    Following a route in intricate and rough terrain, using bearings and pacing

    The course is 1 day, and based in either the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, or the Howgills.  All our course staff are experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders.

     

     

  • Navigation for Runners image

    Navigation for Runners

    “Navigation for Runners” – this is aimed at runners who want to get out in the hills and explore new trails with confidence. It covers similar content to our “Navigation- Starting the Journey” course, but in the context of hill and mountain running .

    It is a practical “hands on” course , with a small group size to help you get the best learning experience.

    You will learn fundamental skills in using a map and compass including:

    Understanding map symbols

    Setting a map so it aligns with your route

    Measuring distance and timing

    Following a route on map and keeping track of location whilst on the move

    The course will also include information on where to go, access, running kit for the  hills, and safety awareness

    The course is 1 day, and based in either the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, or the Howgills  All our course staff are experienced fell runners and orienteers,  as well as being qualified Mountain Leaders.
